Household Mapping and Preparation of Resettlement Plan for Datan Taluka of Keonjar, Orissa

Location: Keonjar, Orissa

Project Description: Industrial infrastructure projects often displace multitudes, and the resettlement and rehabilitation activities suffer due to unavailability of up-to-date and reliable information. Detailed information on the project affected families and the geographical settings in which they live are inevitable for ensuring justice to them.

IEISL undertook a detailed household survey and prepared a comprehensive geodatabase for the Resettlement Action Plan for the proposed Steel Plant of Mittal Arcelor at Keonjhar, Orissa. The household survey was designed and conducted to collect all significant information available from the field. Later, this data was converted to GIS platform, and attached to the spatial data of the taluka developed from high resolution satellite imagery. The database included the land use/land cover, terrain profile, administrative boundaries, infrastructure and connectivity, cultivable/uncultivable lands, the households and their demographic and socio economic information including h/h size, religion/caste, age-sex structure, working and non-working members, cattle stock and other assets, marital status, education status, average income, etc. The database facilitated the preparation of a comprehensive resettlement action plan.

Client: Arcelor Mittal
